Jack and Jill bathrooms first became popular in the 1960’s, when there was an influx in families with children under 18.
In today’s article, we sharing inspiration for plans and layouts, as well as design and decor, for shared bathrooms in between bedrooms.
But before we jump into the ideas and inspiration, let’s start with the basics!
What is a Jack and Jill bathroom?
A Jack and Jill bathroom connects two different bedrooms, typically located in between two bedrooms with a door directly into a bedroom.
However, the Jack and Jill bathroom definition can be expanded to include any bathroom with two or more entrances. One entrance could be directly from a bedroom and another entrance could be from a hallway.
Jack and Jill bathrooms are traditionally used for children’s rooms and usually have two sinks, but don’t necessarily need to have two sinks. You’ll see a few of the Jack and Jill bathroom plans mentioned below only have one sink.
The most distinguishing factor of the Jack and Jill bathroom is that it has two separate entrances. A bathroom that is connected to one bedroom is called an Ensuite. Even if a bathroom features a dual-sink vanity, it isn’t technically a Jack and Jill unless it has two entrances.

Downstairs Shared Bathroom (Ensuite with Hall Access)
When you think of a Jack and Jill bathroom, you think of it being shared between two bedrooms. That isn't always the case. Sometimes it's an ensuite to a bedroom with hall access.
It's the perfect way to position the only bathroom in the house so that you can access it from the bedroom without having to walk out into the hallway in the middle of the night.
The likelihood of someone walking in on you from the bedroom during the day is almost zero, so you should be safe, but lock the doors just in case.
This bathroom layout will be a little different from the narrow jack and jill bathroom layout you are used to seeing since the doors aren't normally at either end.

Girl's Shared Bathroom
A jack and jill bathroom is a great way to give kids their own bathroom when they don't share a bedroom.
This jack and jill bathroom idea is in between two small bedrooms, so the doors are sliding barn doors with locks to maximize space in the bedrooms.
Instead of a built-in vanity, a freestanding vanity is used to give the allusion that it's bigger than it is. I love the shiplap wall behind the vanity too! Shiplap can definitely be used in bathrooms if you install it correctly.
No tub in this narrow jack and jill bathroom layout makes the layout flow and storage under the vanity is perfect for towels and other necessities.

Jack and Jill Bathroom
In this jack and jill bathroom, the doors to the bedrooms are similar to that of the first one. One is on the end and one is in the middle.
Leaving the other end for the toilet and bathtub to have its own door for privacy.
The rest of the layout is narrow and so the double vanity has plenty of drawers for storage.

Kid’s Jack and Jill Bathroom From A Regular Bathroom
Turning a regular bathroom into a jack and jill takes some work, but it can be done! Stealing from each bedroom, reworking closets, and entries will give you a private bathroom to be shared by two bedrooms.
I love the creative wall treatment in this bathroom too!
It keeps the kids out of your bathroom and keeps guests out of the kid's bathroom. It's a win-win for everyone!

Jack and Jill Bathroom Design
Here is another jack and jill bathroom layout version that we haven't seen yet. Both doors open from the bedrooms into the middle of the shared bathroom.
The vanity lives on one end and the toilet and bathtub on the other end with a door for privacy.
This one makes the most sense to me because it eliminates the narrow design of a typical jack and jill bathroom.
Although it seems as if there is a lot of dead space on the side with the vanity, it actually gives you more room and doesn't feel so cramped.

Jack & Jill Bathroom Reveal
This small jack and jill bathroom looks like a regular bathroom. The tub on one side and the vanity and toilet on the other side.
It's not the normal narrow jack and jill bathroom layout you expect, there is plenty of room to move around in this bathroom and it is accessed by each bedroom on either end.
A double vanity isn't a necessity for a shared bathroom, when you're on a budget you work with what you have. That's one of my favorite inexpensive bathroom remodeling tips!

Jack and Jill Bathroom With Shiplap Walls
Out of all the jack and jill bathroom ideas in this post, this one, hands down, has the most storage!
One end of this bathroom has a closet that then opens into a bedroom while the other bedroom accesses the bathroom from the middle.
Every inch of space in this shared bathroom is utilized for an amazing space that can be used by your kids or guests.
And you know that I, of course, love all of the shiplap in this bathroom.

Jack and Jill Bathroom with Pink Vanity
Here's another jack and jill bathroom idea that has a door on one end and the other door opens into the middle with the toilet tucked away out of sight around the corner from the bathtub.
The single vanity was repurposed in this makeover and it got a new PINK look! It has loads of counter space, which is the perfect place to put some bathroom storage jars on a footed vanity tray, perhaps.
The bathtub is positioned across from the vanity just like a regular bathroom.
This jack and jill bathroom layout definitely requires locking the doors if you want privacy, but it's a great way to give guests or kids their own bathroom.

Kids' Bathroom Makeover with Traditional Jack and Jill Layout
Another variation on the traditional narrow jack and jill bathroom layout is this one that forms a T. The vanity is on one side, then the toilet and tub are directly across from it, but in their own closed-off area with a door for privacy.
The vanity spans the entire length of the bathroom with two sinks and plenty of storage for all the things two people sharing a bathroom could possibly need.

Jack and Jill Bathroom Refresh
This final jack and jill bathroom layout is different than the rest although it is the traditional narrow layout you would expect.
The bathtub and toilet are on one end across from each other with a double vanity in the middle and then a linen closet on the other end.
Doors open on each end to be accessed by either room. Every inch of space in this shared bathroom is used efficiently despite its narrow layout.
You really have to see the before to appreciate this reveal!
What to consider when planning a Jack and Jill bathroom
There are several things to consider when you are planning a Jack and Jill bathroom in your home.
- Toilet room: To promote privacy in the bathroom, it’s a good idea to have the toilet is in a separate toilet room (also called water closet or toilet stall) with a bathroom. This way the rest of the bathroom can still be used while someone is using the toilet.
- Toilet and shower room: To go further, you can put both the toilet and shower in a separate room. This is how we set up the layout in our kid’s shared bathroom. This way someone can still use this sinks if someone is taking a shower or bath or using the toilet.
- Locking doors: To make sure everyone using the bathroom feels secure, the locks on the doors should be able to lock on boths sides of the door. So you can lock the door from inside the bathroom when it is in use and you can lock the door from inside the bedroom, so your bedroom can stay private. But it is very important to teach your children that all doors need to be unlocked when they are not being used.
- Light switches: Keep in mind that you should install a lightswitch at each entrance of the bathroom. The switches used in shared bathrooms, like this, should be three-way light switches, meaning that lights can be switched on and off by either switch.
Jack and Jill bathrooms are a great idea if you’re looking for efficiency in your floor plan to save space, but still have the luxurious feel of having a bathroom connected to the bedroom. They are great solutions for families with multiple children!
