I think they don't. Or rather that I think they want trial and error to be the method for exploring which can breed with witch. to encouraging catching 'em all.

Weirdly, Pokemon Stadium 2's library listed every Pokemon's egg group, which is where the names come from.

Pokemon Stadium 2 actually had info on every Pokemon's egg group. I think it's even the first place where the egg groups were given names. But they've never given info about then in the main games.

Note also that the Pokédex can sort Pokémon by body shape or colour, at least in the pre-Switch games (and in HOME) despite these having little if any relevance in gameplay, but not by Egg Group, which is crucial to breeding. (The Egg Groups are shown in Stadium 2 and Pokédex 3D, but not the mainline games.) I’m not a fan of the fact that Nidorina and Nidoqueen are unbreedable, but since it does seem to have been intentional, it ought to be shown in-game in some way. (The Pokédex doesn’t even mention it.)

Note also the case of genderless, breedable Pokémon. Magnemite, Cryogonal, and their ilk are programmed to be in the Mineral egg group, but due to being only breedable with Ditto, I’m not sure if their Egg Group ever becomes relevant in-game. (If they did show the Egg Groups in-game, who knows how they’d deal with such cases.)

I wonder how viable it would be to have natures that could maybe boost 2 stats slightly while lowering 2 others? Granted, even mixed attackers might just prefer to boost one of their attacking stats more, but hey, a little more variety in stat distribution for the main game I suppose.

it would be interesting, though I'd imagine the overall gains would be weaker for a single stat to balance things out.

That said it would likely lead to an exponential increase of natures and mints, and likely the better ones being even more scarce.

Not sure how the math would play out in practice. There are 30 natures currently right?

25.

Each of the five stats has five natures where it's boosted and another stat (including itself) is lowered.

okay, so that is 5 x 5. If we account for double stat altering versions, then that could be 125 hypothetical variations right?

100 new natures, if I'm not mistaken. Assuming you can't double up and boost/reduce the same stat twice. 10 possible pairs of boosted stats x 10 possible pairs of reduced stats.

Plus the 25 existing single-stat versions would be 125, yes.

Pokémon General Thread - TV Tropes Forum (13) i'm not assuming that, but rather that the original 25 would be retained as a result of one of the pairs canceling each other out by affecting the same stat.

I like the idea of double-stat Natures. Regular Natures show the buffed stat as red and the nerfed stat as blue, maybe the dual-Natures can show the buffed stats as light red and the nerfed stats as light blue, to show that they're a smaller increase/decrease.

As far as names go, they can change 4 of the 5 neutral Natures. There doesn't need to be more than one neutral Nature. That covers 4, just 96 more to go.

I disagree. The 5 neutral natures are functionally the same but they are coded differently. I think it's important they maintain a distinction for say, attack boost + attack lowered, or defense boost + defense lowered.

Because it's easier on the code developers if you transfer a docile pokemon and a bashful pokemon from older gens and they keep those labels? And it makes a nice square number (25)?

From TheScrappy.Pokemon:

  • Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon: Watchog. He has the partner (and soon, the player) pinned as 'problem children', which means that he constantly gives them grief for not being perfect even though they often have really good reasons for what they've done. He ignores Pancham and Shelmet's bullying, constantly inflates his own ego, and spends pretty much every scene he's in being unbearable. Scrappy requires they be hated for different reasons than intended, which I'm not seeing as written.
  • Kamado from Pokémon Legends: Arceus is one of the least popular major NPCs in any Pokémon game. He is particularly disliked for his exiling of the player out of barely-founded paranoia, turning the townsfolk against them and even threatening to punish the native Diamond and Pearl clans for helping them. Fans also feel as though he got let off the hook too easily, even with him groveling at the player and begging for forgiveness after they beat him. Adding insult to injury is that he isn't even a strong boss to begin with; all four of his Pokémon have weak movesets, with only Clefable having four moves. Hate is not unintentional so sounds like misuse (might count if objective reason their apology is insufficient), and only being hated for gameplay doesn't count.

Thoughts about them?

Given that the game still tries to have the player understand his plight and motives (from what I recall), that Kamodo example sounds more like a case of Unintentionally Unsympathetic instead.

I always thought the player getting kicked out feels a little off. Near the beginning of the game, Kamado says that if the Diamond and Pearl clans's feud ignited again, the Galaxy Team would have to stay out of it, as they're outsiders. But then when the player gets kicked out of Jubilife, the clans say they can't officially back the player, because it might cause incident with the Galaxy Team... Even though the Diamond and Pearl clans at this point both have the player's back, and Kamado shouldn't have any authority on whether the clans can shelter the player or not.

It feels like the game is stretching logic a bit to push the drama of being banished, and set up meeting Cogita, which... Could've happened anyway.

That might be a just bugs me for myself, though.

No, I agree with that. I thought it was awkward while the event was playing out. It's clear they wanted to do a sequence where you get banished and dramatically lose all your support late in the story after having built yourself up so much, but they wrote themselves in a corner by also having there be a dozen people from other villages who you've already become friends with over the course of the story who could easily help you out. In order to do it they had either have the Diamond and Pearl clan members somehow not know you were kicked out, or do what they did and try and give a reason why they can't openly help you, and it just doesn't scan well.
